With Elsen and Son , nothing is impossible. We have no manufacturing limits as regards materials, dimensions or colours.
We work in keeping with traditions, adopting ancestral techniques which we are constantly updating for today’s clients. Our workshops are located in Europe, Nepal, India and Thailand.
Our head office is in Belgium, but our offices are spread throughout Europe, the United States and the Middle-East.
The steps involved in manufacturing
Here you can find all the steps, from the creation of the carpet until its delivery.
Design and creation
A diagram of the carpet is drawn, in which its shape, dimension, colour and design is determined. The diagram is studied to ensure that the carpet corresponds exactly to the tastes of the client, its environment and the dimensions of the room in which it is going to be fitted.
All our carpets are tailor-made, which allows combining various different factors in the creation of a carpet: shape, design, thickness, colour and choice of fibres.
Dyeing natural fibres
Natural fibres, of plant or animal origin, are hand-dyed as per the quantities and colours in the diagram for each carpet.
Spinning the fibres
Once they are dyed, the fibres are spun on spools so that they can be manipulated easily when the carpet is being made.
Knotting, tufting or weaving
We use different techniques depending on your requirements and the material used.
- Hand-knotted carpet (from 60,000 to 200,000 knots per m²):
This ancestral work of art-handicraft requires flawless precision, expertise and technique to ensure that each knot is made, one by one, with perfect precision.
The beauty of this type of carpet lies in this technique which is a blend of finesse and consistency.
- Hand-tufted carpet:
Hand-tufted carpets are made by manually crocheting, using a nozzle gun, the textile wicks one by one in a criss-crossed web, which forms the base.
This technique is a lot quicker than hand-knotting and needs less precision.
- Hand-woven carpet:
The hand-woven carpet is made by sliding textile wicks from between a series of wires stretched around a frame (called a loom). The wicks are then compressed and folded back using a comb.
Carpets are rinsed using running water. This step allows the knots and fibres to become tighter and gives them their lustre, flexibility and density.
The carpets are stretched on frames and dried under the sun.
The carpets are shaved and cut to give them their thickness, shape and final texture. Certain designs are created in relief, and this effect is created by using different sizes of hair fibres.
Over-sewing or stitching
This finishing technique consists of creating a hemline all around the carpet so that the knots or wicks do not unravel.
This finishing is very important because it guarantees the durability and quality of the carpet.
Shipping, acceptance and verification
The carpets are rolled or folded depending on their size. They are packaged and put into crates before being shipped via an airplane.
When they arrive from our workshops, the quality of the carpets is checked before they are re-shipped across the world and are delivered to you.
