For nearly thirty years, the Belgian house ELSEN AND SON has been devoted to reinventing the rug.
Born from a passion for materials and textures, it has established a unique signature: timeless, elegant, and oriented towards high-end architecture.
At the beginning, it is the story of a bond and a passion, between a mother and her son.
A passion for the beauty of materials, for the richness of textures, and for the fascination with the techniques of rug-making.
From this passion came journeys to distant lands, home to ancestral know-how where the art of rug weaving has been passed down for generations.
Throughout these travels, Mrs. J. Elsen and her son, Mr. J. El-Masri, built meaningful encounters, forged bonds of trust, and assembled teams capable of bringing their vision to life.
Production was first established in Nepal and India, where the house today owns its own manufacturing facilities.
These sites are complemented by a network of partnerships with the finest artisans around the world, further broadening the spectrum of expertise.
To meet the expectations of the most demanding clients and to offer a unique range of techniques and materials—while consolidating one of the world’s largest rug collections—we continue to produce entirely by hand, drawing on local craftsmanship in Nepal, India, as well as in Europe, Thailand, China and the Philippines.
All our rugs are designed in Belgium, at the company’s headquarters, nestled in the heart of nature in the Condroz region, in Hamois near Namur. This place of inspiration, both serene and stimulating, nourishes creativity and anchors each creation in the Belgian identity of the brand.
Today, Mr. J. El-Masri and his partner, Mr. F. Clabots, have fully taken over the management and artistic direction of the house, pursuing the family heritage with both rigor and creativity, while bringing a breath of modernity. This constant dialogue between heritage and innovation has shaped the identity of the house.
ELSEN AND SON rugs are now found in private residences, hotels, and prestigious projects around the world. Distributed internationally through a network of premium retailers and renowned architects, our creations continue to uphold one ambition: to elevate the rug to the rank of Art.
